Design beckons

Salone Internazionale del Mobile is 50 years old, or rather young, as the organisers put it. All the leading design brands are exhibiting their latest creations either in the Fiera area, just north of Milan, or in their showrooms. For one week, Milan is again at the centre of the world’s attention.

The city is really abuzz with events and truly stylish people running from presentation to presentation, trying to visit the main fair and the Fuori Salone, a parallel event that focuses on new and alternative talents, where it is possible to spot the future of international design, not only in furniture.

The Fondazione Prada hosted a cocktail for Rotor, an artist commune that has created sculptures out of the props used in fashion shows since 2003. Zegna has hosted an evening to introduce the latest Flos table lamp. Frankie Morello has shown a very interesting collaboration with the London-based designers Jimmie Martin and their baroque ‘n’roll creations. Valextra is showcasing the work of renowned Swedish illustrator Liselotte Watkins in the Manzoni store and it is always a pleasure popping in at the Fornasetti store in corso Matteotti; and these are just a tiny fraction of what happened on one evening alone.
