Luxury knitwear designers and Central St Martin graduates, Sam Leutton and Jenny Postle, make up design duo "Leutton Postle". Jenny’s MA AW11 collection was quickly snapped up by Browns Focus, as they became the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Merit Award winners in July 2011. Leutton Postle will again be showcasing with Vauxhall Fashion Scout at Freemasons’ Hall on Tuesday 18th September, and as we look to what SS13 may bring, you can still pick up their coveted AW12 collection at Browns.
Leutton Postle’s multiple, reverse applique knits may require the most meticulous, and dextrous handiwork, but that attention to craft doesn't limit them creatively, with off-beat, vibrant faces making up much of their recent collection. Leutton Postle described in a nutshell...? ‘Colourful, bold, textural, offbeat, and patterned’ might just about cover it, but that's just scratching the surface.
As former Browns guest-bloggers (they took over the blog back in May), we only thought it right to feature Jenny and Sam, with an exclusive insight into the coming season, just for Brown's readers of course!
Stocked in Browns, a store renowned for handpicking the stars of fashion's future, and previous winners of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout 'Merit Award’, how do you think these two factors have contributed to the progression of your careers so far?
Being stocked in Browns Focus is great and the fact that they are showing their continuing support is amazing. There are a lot of young labels that would go to great lengths to get into Browns Focus, so to be there really is an honour... The Merit Award is a great platform for young designers; it gains such wide media attention! Over three seasons Vauxhall have supported us a lot, without that support the last year and a half would have been a completely different story.
As recent graduates who have achieved success in securing buyers, and showcasing as part of London Fashion Week, what advice would you give to those at the very beginning of their design careers, both recent graduates, and those still studying?
Work hard, both on your design work and everything else - there's a hell of a lot that goes into a label aside from designing that makes it what it is. Most importantly, build strong relationships with people that you respect and they'll guide you down the right paths.
What are the advantages of working together as a design duo, as opposed to working as individuals? Do you ever experience any conflict in opinions? If you do, are the ideas you disagree on disregarded, or compromised?
Two minds are better than one, as they say. It's good because we both bring different skills and experience to the table. And yes, we disagree, it would be unhealthy not to, but we compromise and the result of this is often better than either's initial ideas.
You're showing with Vauxhall Fashion Scout again this September, what can we expect to see from you this coming season? What's been the biggest source of inspiration with regards to Spring/Summer?
This season we are doing a salon show presentation, which is new for us. It will be very different to the wham bam boom of the last two seasons but we want to excite in another way. As for inspiration we're keeping everything under wraps until September, but we hope to raise heads with the direction we are taking. What we will say is we're working with introducing the idea of 'luxury' to Leutton Postle, which is both challenging and exciting!
How do you see the 'Leutton Postle' label progressing over the seasons ahead?
We want to get better and better, gain stockists abroad, all the while continuing to push ourselves design-wise and retain our creativity.
Leutton Postle’s show will take place at Vauxhall Fashion Scout on Tuesday 18th September.
